Burton Snowboards

Though primarily used during the spring “buying season” by manufacturer’s reps as presentation centers, Burton Regional Showrooms are part concept shop, part conference center, part office space and part nightclub/art gallery.

The constantly shifting demands of major events, retail sales and day-to-day office humdrum require “lightweight” design elements and modular floorplans such that these spaces can reconfigure daily to accomodate.

Ocupop designed everything from Coffee Table Coasters to Modular Steel Walls in both the Chicago and Northern California Burton Showrooms. We managed fabrication and build-out…we even turned a few screws ourselves.

Disciplines: Interiors & Environments

Burton Chicago

When Burton Snowboards decided to increase their visibility in Middle America with a dedicated year-round showroom they came to their good friends at Ocupop for direction. A break-neck timeline presented some interesting challenges, but the result speaks for itself. From sketches on cocktail napkins to digital renderings to wildly waving arms, concepts were evolved to satisfy the multi-use objectives of the space. Modular free-standing grid-wall elements slide easily to quickly reconfigure the space from presentation mode to retail mode to party mode in seconds...all operated by satellite GPS (really!?). Nice shot of the Lisa Glass element shortly after install number one...note beer bottle and chocolate cake - a job well done. Custom Poster mounting. Modular, reconfigurable board rack holds up to 150 boards in multiple different geometries. Binding 'Hover-Craft' shelving. Floating, spinning merchandising...the future is now! POP placement. Presentation numero uno. Is that a giant box of cheez-its?

Burton Oakland

Shortly following the commencement of 'Ocupop's Overnight Extreme Make-Over Chicago Edition' Burton's west-coast operations moved into new digs in Oakland. On a more traditional timeline and budget Ocupop help to evolve an old sewing machine factory into a highly functional multi-room, multi-purpose space. A central element both literally and figuratively to this project was a modular wall system that could divide the main room of the building visually and provide much-needed merchandising space. Though a simple wall just won't do when, in the blink of an eye, that wall has to disappear to make room for a video premier or a Blowout sale. The perfect solution was manifested in welded steel, offering an industrial-strength barrier as well as a rock-solid foundation for a unique, infinitely adjustable chair-lift cable based shelving system. Dozens of detailed drawings and prints were generated to effectively effectively manage fabrication of this and many other custom elements. Notice the lighting...yeah, we speak electrician too! Notrub. Notrub....Just don't say it three times fast. Notrub. Notrub....Just don't say it three times fast. Notrub. Notrub....Just don't say it three times fast. An ingenious solution to making the divider wall installation sturdy yet easily reconfigurable was achieved through some subtle engineering trickery...ask Michael, too much preload, backlash, etc. to describe here. As this space is used as equal parts trade showroom and retail outlet, many elements found themselves serving double-duty. This is a preliminary sketch of an enormous display case that during trade season functions as a dramatic presentation cell but once retail takes over, quickly converts to shared merchandising and racking space. Detail shot of finished piece. Immediately after installation, set for presentation mode. Please disregard the nakedness...though do note the custom lightboxes and tables. Van der Wahls forces be damned, we settled for infitely adjustable Magnetic Shelving. Wall-mounted rails provide more reconfigurable racking and shelving. Same lift-cable based system accomodates shelving, racking and board display components. Wall-mounted rails provide more reconfigurable racking and shelving.
